TSC Begins Promotion Interviews with Primary School Teachers
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has officially kicked off the long-awaited promotion interviews across the country.
A total of 64,619 teachers who applied for the 21,313 promotion slots have been shortlisted. The promotion exercise covers teachers in job groups C1 to D4, including Curriculum Support Officers (CSOs).
Phase One: Primary School Teachers
The interviews began on 6th October 2025 with primary school teachers. This phase will run until 10th October 2025.
For primary schools, the first candidates are those seeking promotions to grades C4, C5, and D1.
Phase Two: Secondary, TTC, and CSOs
The second phase will cover post-primary teachers (secondary schools and teacher training colleges) as well as CSOs. These interviews will run from 13th to 24th October 2025.
Scoresheet Favors Senior Teachers
Securing a promotion will be difficult for younger teachers since the promotion scoresheet favors older and longer-serving staff.
- Teachers aged 52–56 years earn 25 marks
- Those aged 47–51 years get 20 marks
- Teachers under 41 years only score 10 marks
Years served in the current job group also carry significant weight:
- 7+ years in the same grade → 30 marks
- 6 years → 25 marks
- 5 years → 20 marks
- 4 years → 15 marks
- 3 years → 10 marks
Teachers who have acted as administrators will also receive extra consideration.
More Slots Coming in 2026
TSC currently seeks to fill 21,313 vacancies, but the number is expected to rise. President William Ruto recently pledged to double annual teacher promotions from 25,000 to 50,000 starting next year.
During a meeting at State House, he also confirmed that funding for promotions will increase from Sh1 billion to Sh2 billion annually.
Promotions Under Ruto’s Tenure
Since President Ruto took office, TSC has already declared:
- 14,034 promotions (Dec 2022)
- 36,275 promotions (Sept 2023)
- 25,633 promotions (2024)
- 21,313 promotions (Aug 2025)
This brings the total to 97,255 teacher promotions so far.
