TSC to make replacements as 10,000 teachers exit payroll by Dec.

As more than 10,000 teachers reach mandatory retirement age and leave the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) payroll by the end of December, the TSC will replace them.

While many are classroom teachers, others of the departing instructors are school administrators.

However, when teachers objected to a chaotic replacement process in the previous fiscal year, the Commission is quick to decide how it will handle teacher replacements the following year.

TSC was given a budget of Sh 2.5 billion by the Treasury in September 2023 to replace 6,000 teachers.

Nevertheless, the Commission did not make the openings public; instead, it quietly assigned the positions to MPs and politicians to serve their areas.

Some educators gave up as much as Sh400,000 in order to find work. Although there was little merit to the replacements, corruption and cronyism continued.

This is thought to be an attempt by Kenya Kwanza to give lawmakers incentives for supporting its cause.

TSC reverted to its gloomy past, when politicians meddled in Commission operations, such as the high levels of prejudice and corruption in teacher hiring.

Some of the teachers were hired on pensionable, permanent positions without completing an internship.

The Cabinet Secretary for Education at the time, Ezekiel Machogu, was in charge of the backdoor teacher recruitment.

Machogu was caught on camera giving teachers employment letters during a Kisii County event.

When Kenyan youth, known as Gen Z, protested poor administration, the president fired his cabinet, which included former chief secretary Ezekiel Machogu.

According to this, a teacher must first complete a minimum of one year of internship before being hired on a permanent basis.

The one-year Teacher Internship Program is designed to prepare and maintain the skills of those entering the teaching profession.

Through coaching, mentoring, and exposure to real-world teaching situations, the initiative arranges for jobless registered instructors to be placed in educational institutions.

Most current intern teachers have been with the company for two years, although the internship will last for twelve months.

A teacher internship is not a paid position. Nonetheless, interns affiliated with junior secondary institutions will be entitled to a Kshs. 20,000/= monthly stipend.

The stipend will be given after statutory deductions such as the Housing Levy, NSSF, and NHIF, if any.

A certificate will be given to teacher interns who successfully complete the internship program.

For junior secondary schools, TSC is currently hiring 20,000 teachers for internships. January will see the teachers assigned to schools.

In January 2025, 46,000 teachers who are presently serving on internship terms will be confirmed to PNP terms.
