TSC divided the positions into three categories: primary schools (6,000), junior secondary schools (39,550), and secondary schools (450).
The commission received Sh13.4 billion from the Treasury to fill the permanent and pensionable positions for the intern teachers starting in January 2025.
Candidates for posts in primary schools were required by TSC to possess a minimum of a P1 certificate, while those applying for positions in junior or senior secondary schools were required to possess an education diploma.
Between October 1 and October 8, 2024, TSC received 314,117 applications in response to the posting.
Speaking before the Parliamentary Education Committee, Macharia stated that 144,177 applications were for JSS teachers, compared to 39,550 advertised positions, and 93,646 applications were for elementary teacher positions, out of the 6,000 advertised.
She went on to say that 76,294 applications had been submitted to the Commission for the 450 secondary school teaching positions it had posted.
Macharia informed lawmakers that Sh1 billion had been set out for teacher advancement during the 2024–2025 fiscal year.
