KNEC Sets Deadline for Grade 3, 7, and 8 SBA Project Score Submissions

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has issued a directive to all public and private schools to submit School-Based Assessment (SBA) project scores for Grades 3, 7, and 8 by July 31, 2025. This move comes as part of the ongoing implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

SBA Submission Guidelines for 2025

In a circular dated April 15, 2025, KNEC outlined the timelines and procedures for the administration and submission of performance tasks and project-based assessments. The materials for these assessments were made available on the KNEC CBA portal from May 5, 2025.

Here are the submission details:

The Grade 3 theme for this year’s Integrated Learning Assessment focused on “Health habits that promote individual and community wellbeing.”

Grade 9 Projects & KJSEA 2025

Currently, schools are also administering Grade 9 projects in Pre-Technical Studies and Creative Arts and Sports as part of the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA). These must be submitted by August 30, 2025. KNEC has warned that late submission will attract a penalty of Ksh 500 per school.

CBC Assessment Structure

KNEC clarified how assessments will contribute to a learner’s final score as they prepare to transition to senior secondary:

  • School-Based Assessments (SBA): 20% – done in Grades 7 and 8
  • KPSEA (Grade 6 final): 20%
  • KJSEA (Grade 9 final): 60%

This makes a total of 100%, which will be used to place learners into senior secondary pathways beginning Grade 10 in 2026, as the pioneer CBC cohort advances.

How Schools Can Submit SBA Scores

Schools are required to:

  • Log into the CBA portal via https://cba.knec.ac.ke
  • Download the assessment tools
  • Administer the projects and performance tasks
  • Score using the provided guides
  • Upload all learners’ scores before the deadline

For login or password issues, headteachers are advised to contact their Sub County Directors of Education.

Key Reminders for Headteachers

  • Maintain records and evidence of the assessments
  • Improvise or use locally available materials
  • Use the detailed user manual on the CBA portal for instructions
  • Ensure timely and accurate score uploads to avoid penalties

With millions of learners currently under the CBC, timely and efficient administration of SBAs is critical. Schools are urged to complete the process by July 31, 2025, to support a smooth transition for learners across the education system.
