
Grade 10 School and Category Selection Criteria
Grade 10 School and Category Selection Criteria, Each learner is required to select 12 schools for Grade 10 placement, categorized as follows:
- 9 Boarding Schools
- 3 schools within the learner’s county
- 6 schools outside the learner’s county
- 3 Day Schools
- Located within the learner’s Sub-County
Selection must span all four (4) clusters across three subject combinations:
Subject Combination 1, 2 & 3 (Each follows this cluster pattern):
- Cluster 1: Boarding Schools (preferably outside home county)
- Cluster 2: Boarding Schools (preferably outside home county)
- Cluster 3: Boarding/Hybrid Schools (preferably within home county)
- Cluster 4: Day Schools (within learner’s Sub-County)
Senior School Pathways and Subject Selection
Each learner will pursue 7 subjects:
- 4 Core Subjects:
- English
- Kiswahili/Kenya Sign Language
- Community Service Learning
- Physical Education
- 3 Pathway Subjects based on the learner’s chosen track:
- STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics)
- Social Sciences
- Creative Arts and Sports Science
How Pathway and Subject Selection Works
Learners must choose 12 schools based on subject combinations and accommodation preferences:
- 4 schools in the first choice subject combination
- 4 schools in the second choice subject combination
- 4 schools in the third choice subject combination
Accommodation Breakdown:
- 9 boarding schools (3 from the home county, 6 outside the county)
- 3 day schools (in home sub-county)
Note: Schools may apply for pre-selection status if they meet Ministry of Education criteria and do not permit open placement.

Priority Placement for Top Performers
- Top 6 learners per gender in each STEM track per sub-county: Priority for boarding schools
- Top 3 learners per gender in Social Science tracks: Boarding school placements
- Top 2 learners per gender in Arts and Sports Science tracks: Boarding school placements
- Learners achieving average levels 7 or 8: Eligible for boarding school placement based on track
Admission & Replacement Process
- Placement results will indicate the school assigned
- Joining instructions will be available online via the learner’s Assessment Number
- All admissions must be completed through KEMIS
- No principal shall enroll a learner on KEMIS before physical reporting
Replacements:
- Declared by schools with vacancies via County Directors of Education
- Learners submit change requests via their junior school head at least two weeks before official reporting date
- Priority to learners who initially selected the requested school
- Replacements are one-time and final; letters must be accessed online

- Search “Senior School Selection Portal” on your browser and click the first link
- Click Log In (for mobile, use the menu icon)
- Enter Junior School NEMIS UIC and password
- Use verification code 54321 (only for piloting phase)
- Click PATHWAY SELECTION
Update Learner Profile:
- Select individual learners and update:
- Special needs (if any)
- Stakeholders present during selection (parent, HOI, class teacher)
- Location: Home county/sub-county and residence
- Parent/guardian details
Select Pathway and Subject Combinations:
- Choose 1 Pathway: STEM, Social Sciences, or Arts & Sports
- Select 3 Subject Combinations
- For each combination, select 4 schools (one from each cluster)
Finalize and Download:
- After completing all selections, download or print the learner’s updated profile
Note: This platform is separate from NEMIS — do not use NEMIS for this process.
