Application date for university financing for the 2024-2025 academic year is extended by the govt.

Application date for university financing for the 2024-2025 academic year is extended by the govt.

The government has extended the deadline for KCSE students enrolling in institutions for the 2024–25 academic year to apply for financing.

The deadline has been extended by 10 days and is now set to close on August 15, 2024, according to Beatrice Inyangala, Principal Secretary of the State Department of Higher Education and Research.

“Government funding will be distributed based on individual student need under the New Funding Model,” the spokesperson stated.

According to the PS, people who seek for money will be the only ones eligible for government assistance.

She disclosed that, beginning on August 19, 2024, parents and guardians will be notified about the university fees and household contribution to the cost of university programs.

From the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) 2023 cohort, 153,275 students were placed in public and private universities by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS).

On June 18, 2024, the Ministry of Education released the application portal for loans and scholarships for the KCSE cohort of 2023. Since then, the application process has been ongoing.

An update on the procedure was provided by Inyangala in a statement on Monday night.

“As of August 4, 2024, a total of 79,038 university students had applied for both loans and scholarships but 74,237 university students are yet to apply for funding,” she stated.

The PS reaffirmed the government’s commitment to offering university students and those enrolled in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) schools a high-quality, reasonably priced education.

“Under the Leave No One Behind framework, we urge all students who have not yet applied for loans and scholarships to do so by visiting www.hef.co.ke,” she stated.

On May 3, 2023, President William Ruto revealed the new University Fundind Model and declared that government loans, bursaries, and scholarships will be available to university students, beginning with those enrolled in the 2023–2024 academic year.

By giving them more money than their counterparts from wealthier families, the model places a greater emphasis on assisting students from the most disadvantaged homes.

Students from low-income families will now have equitable access to university and technical and vocational education for the first time. At that time, the President declared, “Their households shall make no contribution towards the education of their children.”

The Ministry of Education canceled the first-year fees for 2024–25 university students who were put there by KUCCPS on July 19.

PS Inyangala stated in a statement, “We wish to confirm that their places in the academic programs are firmly secured.”

The ministry would launch a new price system on August 5, she continued, but in her Monday announcement, she changed the start date to August 19, 2024.
